The Department of Dutch and South African Studies seeks to teach and promote an understanding of the languages, cultures and literatures of the Netherlands, Belgium and the Republic of South Africa. The department offers BA and MA programmes in Dutch Studies and a Specialization in South African Studies and hosts a scholarly journal Werkwinkel. Journal of Low Countries and South African studies.

Departmental interest areas involve:

  • the Dutch, Flemish and South-African literatures of the nineteenth and twentieth century
  • cultural studies of the Low Countries and South Africa
  • the language policy and planning in South Africa
  • postcolonial representations of South Africa in Dutch and Polish literature
  • social-political and other contextual aspects of literature and art
  • the historiography and theory of European avant-garde and modernism
  • the language situation in Belgium
